50 anti-Donald Trump protesters were arrested in Washington, DC, after some 500 anti-Trump protesters confronted 100 police officers, according to local police.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — More than four dozen anti-Donald Trump protesters have been arrested in Washington, DC for engaging in violence, local police told Sputnik on Friday.

"Fifty people have been arrested," a police officer said.

Earlier in day, some 500 anti-Trump protesters confronted 100 police officers, who were equipped with batons and tear gas, at a location just several blocks from Capitol Hill where Trump was sworn in as the forty-fifth president of the United States.

The officer noted the arrested individuals are suspected of breaking windows and throwing rocks at car windshields.

A standoff between demonstrators and police is taking place at the corner of 12th and L streets, but is expected to end as police are removing the pushing the remaining protesters from the area, a Sputnik correspondent reported from the scene.

The Forensic Science Service Division officers started to collect evidence on the site of violence.
