The suspect is in custody and police have said there was only one shooter. The situation has been locked down by police and uninjured would-be flyers are currently being evacuated.

Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief confirmed that the subject who has been detained is male, but that she could not currently provide further details. What's more, officials are extremely confident the gunman acted alone, but the motive for the killing remains unknown. Officials have ruled out the possibility that the attack was an act of terror.

The incident occurred near Terminal 2 of the airport, possibly near the baggage claim area. It's worth noting that Terminal 2 has just one concourse with nine gates only for passengers flying on Delta and Air Canada. About an hour later, Terminal 1 was evacuated, but police have not said why.

Fort Lauderdale International Airport is one of the busiest airports in South Florida after Miami. Passengers frequently head to Ft. Lauderdale International Airport to visit Florida's Everglades or as a stopping point before traveling to the Carribbean.
The airport has been temporarily shutdown, according to officials at the scene of the crime.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is en route Fort Lauderdale, where he is slated to be briefed by Broward Sheriff's Office on the details of the shooting,according to spokeswoman Jackie Schutz. "Governor Scott is currently traveling to Fort Lauderdale to be briefed by law enforcement," Schutz stated.

Democratic Florida Senator Bill Nelson has identified the shooter as Esteban Santiago and claimed that Santiago had a military ID. Other reports have emerged that Santiago is in his late 20s and was born in New Jersey.
There has been "incredible cohesiveness" between local law enforcement and the FBI, according to a police officer. Santiago is currently being interviewed by the FBI and was not harmed by local law enforcement.
