"I think that the attack on people who visit Christmas markets and prepare for Christmas is an assault on cultural identity of Europe itself," Fico told journalists, as quoted by the Pravda newspaper.
The security measures in the Slovak Republic’s public places have been enhanced since Monday’s evening, while the police patrols in the communities are enforced by 50 percent, the prime minister added.
Fico sent a telegram to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, expressing his condolences following the attack.
On Monday, a truck rammed into the crowd at the Berlin Christmas market on the Breitscheidplatz square, killing 12 people and injuring 48. Police have confirmed the ramming was intentional and detained the suspect, a Pakistani national registered at a refugee center. On Tuesday, Merkel confirmed the terrorism suspicions behind the truck attack.
