Libya's Tobruk-Based Parliament to Offer New Roadmap on Political Settlement

The Tobruk-based Libyan parliament will soon offer a new roadmap on political settlement as it believes the UN-backed Presidential Council has failed to govern the country, Libyan Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh told Sputnik Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — As agreed in December 2015, the two Libyan rival parliaments — the Tobruk-based Parliament and the Tripoli-based New General National Congress — established a UN-backed Libyan Political Dialogue as a mechanism of reconciliation and formed the Government of National Accord.

"The Presidential Council, as we see it, is unable to cope with the affairs in the country. We expect that the parliament in the coming days will offer a new road map to reach a political agreement," Saleh said.

He added that the Council had failed to offer any solutions for the country.

"Prices have grown, Libyan dinar has fallen, they [members of the council] were unable to offer anything," the speaker stressed.

The UN-backed Presidential Council moved into the Libyan capital in March 2016 after the General National Congress gave up power. A total of 145 of its members joined the government’s advisory body.

The Tobruk-based parliament refuses to recognize the authority of the Government of National Accord and the Presidential Council without bringing the matter to a vote of confidence.
