In this program John Harrison is joined by Professor Jonathan Hearn and Dr Atsuko Ichijo to unravel what is nationalism and why it is that nationalist movements seem to be on the increase.

John Harrison is joined by Jonathan Hearn, Professor of Political and Historical Sociology at the University of Edinburgh and Dr Atsuko Ichijo, Associate Professor in the school of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the Kingston University, London.

The academics debate the difference between nationalism and patriotism and how they are related to allegiance to the state; which leads into discussion of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign for presidency and its relationship to nationalist sentiment.

Further explored is the relationship of ethnicity and nationalism and Professor Hearn touches on the example of the US, which is very much a country of mixed ethnicity, despite its strong identity. They also look at the impact of globalisation and economic factors on nationalist trends and discuss populism and events such as Brexit.
