EU Council to Have Political Control Over Brexit, Tusk Says
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – EU leaders did not discuss the possibility of sanctions being introduced over the situation in Syria at a Thursday summit, President of the European Council Donald Tusk told journalists.

"We didn’t discuss new sanctions as a measure [to resolve the conflict in Syria]," Tusk said.

In October, Tusk offered to threaten Russia with sanctions over the situation in Syria’s Aleppo, where Syrian government forces have been engaged in fierce fighting against militant groups.

Tusk told journalists on Thursday that the European Union was ready to pressure global players in Syria in order to ensure humanitarian aid deliveries to Aleppo civilians.

Meanwhile German Chancellor Angela Merkel said after the Thursday EU summit that no scenarios should be excluded when it comes to the issue of possible sanctions against Russia over the Syrian issue.

Merkel did say that EU leaders did not cover the issue in detail on Thursday.
