The EU states have already reached an understanding that prolongation of sanctions against Russia is inevitable, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Earlier this year, the Lithuanian foreign minister announced that the country would impose new sanctions against Russia if the European Union decided not to do that.

"About sanctions it has been already agreed. All [EU] member states understand that it is inevitable," Grybauskaite told reporters before the summit of EU leaders that takes place in Brussels.

She added that the appropriate procedures were "already in place."

Russia’s relations with Western countries, including Lithuania, deteriorated since Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014. The European Union has been accusing Moscow of meddling in the conflict in eastern Ukraine and has imposed sanctions against Russia.

Russia has repeatedly refuted the allegations, warning that the Western sanctions are counterproductive and undermine global stability.
