BERLIN (Sputnik) — Germany will increase security provision on the border with Austria to fight illegal border crossings starting Thursday, the German Interior Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

"On the decision of the Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr Thomas de Maiziere, border controls on the border with Austria will be intensified from December 15, 2016 onward," the press release read.

Commenting on the move, Maiziere said that the German-Austrian border remained the center of illegal migration to Germany.

Europe is currently facing a major refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of migrants attempting to reach deemed wealthy EU member states through various routes, including via Italy, Greece, Turkey and Balkan states. Despite Brussels' efforts to curb the migration influx, many people still continue to attempt to reach the European Union.

According to German Interior Ministry, some 890,000 migrants arrived in Germany in 2015.
