MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Monday, UN special envoy for Syria’s adviser Jan Egeland accused Russia and Syria of being responsible for alleged atrocities during the liberation of Aleppo. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the allegations saying that Egeland had not mentioned the atrocities carried out by militant groups in Aleppo, evidencing that he was not aware of the situation on the ground.
"Situation in Aleppo looks still confusing for those who wished [Syrian President Bashar] Assad's regime to fall into pieces. So nongovernmental organizations are just following facts and advices released by western chancelleries, and fear for the security of their members on the ground. Since the mainstream ideology is that all faults are on Assad's troops and ally Russia, nobody wishes to understand that Russia had a better assessment of the ground situation. And unfortunately what should be agreements for the sake of Syrians between Russia and other foreign powers involved in the war is not on the agenda," Dhuicq, who is also a member of the French National Assembly's Defense Committee said.
Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war, a number of Western media outlets, as well as political leaders have criticized the position of Damascus during the conflict, including in regard to the battle of Aleppo.
