Protection of civilians in Syria is the main priority for humanitarian missions of the European Union, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Monday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — After a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Federica Mogherini told reporters:

"Now the priority is the protection of civilians … not only [in] Aleppo, because it is not the only part of the country where the situation is very serious, I would say dramatic."

Mogherini noted that the European Union would never consider an option to abandon civilians, while the support the bloc provided comprised not only diplomatic actions, but also the humanitarian assistance.

"I would like to stress that some two million people in Syria have gained access to safe water, sanitation and our support too because of the humanitarian aid the European Union has provided," Mogherini said.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting the Syrian opposition groups striving to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Syrian government is also fighting terrorist groups such as Jabhat Fatah al Sham (formerly known as al-Nusra Front) and Daesh, both outlawed in Russia.
