According to a report by North Korean state news agency KCNA, who is supreme commander of the nation's Korean People's Army, guided the combat drill of the North Korean special operations unit called KPA Unit 525.

"[Kim] said that if the service personnel of the unit are to conduct bold combat actions with the southern part of Korea as their theatre, they should stage intensive drills… and thus firmly prepare themselves to be stalwart fighters for guerrilla warfare," read the KCNA report.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, North Korean Central Television reports of the drills showed troops capturing various targets, including a model of the Blue House.

Several days earlier, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea warned against possible provocations that could be carried out by North Korea during the ongoing political crisis in Seoul and said the South Korean army is on high alert. According to the JCS, North Korea might make such a decision "because of a wrong assessment of situation."

"If North Korean authorities conduct a provocation, it will be equal to suicide for them, because they will face a decisive response," head of public affairs at the JCS Jeon Ha-gyu said in a statement.

Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta notes that South Korea and the United States conduct their own military drills, which include imitating the capture of North Korean territories, the destruction of nuclear and missile objects and the assassination of Kim and other North Korean high officials.
