Head of US Department of Defense Ash Carter arrived in Afghanistan unannounced to meet with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, US media reported on Friday.

MOSCOW(Sputnik) — Carter will hold talks with Ghani and meet with US military commanders and troops at Bagram Air Base, according to CNN broadcaster.

US Army Aims to Send Nearly 1,500 Troops to Afghanistan

The visit comes amid uncertainty over the future of the US policy on Afghanistan under the administration of the next president, Donald Trump, who has so far said little about US involvement in the country torn apart by the civil unrest.

Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil, with Taliban insurgents and other extremist factions operating in the country. The United States has been carrying out a counter-terrorist operation in Afghanistan since 2001.
