Japan to Give Iran $2.1 Million for Nuclear Security to Help Lift Sanctions

Japan has made a decision to provide Iran with 2,05 million euro (about $2.1 million) through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the purposes of nuclear security to help the country implement its obligations under the nuclear deal and ensure the lifting of sanctions, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Kishida held a press conference after negotiations with his Iranian colleague Mohammad Javad Zarif.

“It is important to continue implementation of nuclear agreements,” Kishida added as quoted by the Kyodo news agency.

US president-elect Donald Trump during his election company said he intended to cancel the deal with Iran.

Earlier in December, the US Senate voted in favor of extending sanctions imposed against Iran in 1996 for 10 more years. Part of the sanctions related to the country's controversial nuclear program were lifted in January 2016 in exchange for Iran's pledge to comply with the nuclear deal reached with the P5+1 group of world powers — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States plus Germany.

Japan expressed its willingness to economically cooperate with Iran after the removal of sanctions.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said his country would not allow the new US president to tear up the nuclear agreement. Rouhani considers the extension of sanctions to be a violation of the deal.
