US Vice President Joe Biden met Kurdistan Regional Security Council Chancellor Masrour Barzani and a delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to discuss the fight against Daesh in Iraq, the KRG’s US representative said in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The KRG envoy said in a Twitter post on Thursday that Barzani thanked America for supporting Peshmerga against Daesh.

Barzani said the delegation discussed security and political challenges in Iraq after the defeat of the Islamic State, as well as future dynamics in the country.

He further thanked the United States for supporting Kurdistan and the Peshmerga forces.

Speaking at the Woodrow Wilson Center earlier on Thursday, Barzani said the Kurds in northern Iraq need international support to combat extremists even after the Islamic State is defeated.

The Kurdish Peshmerga forces are participating in the operation to retake Iraq's second largest city of Mosul from the Islamic State in an operation led by the Iraqi armed forces.
