Vast Majority of US Citizens Believe Fake News Headlines

Most US citizens, especially those, who use Facebook as a major source of news, believe fake news headlines, a new survey said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A total of 75 percent of US nationals believe fake news headlines, according to the survey conducted by Ipsos for the BuzzFeed News media outlet.

"People, who said they rely on Facebook as a ‘major’ source of news appeared to be disproportionately susceptible to fake news headlines. In the course of 553 judgments about fake news headlines they recognized, these respondents deemed the information to be somewhat or very accurate 83% of the time," the survey issued on Tuesday said.

According to the research, Facebook is the third most popular source of news in the United States ceding only to the CNN and Fox News.

The survey also said that people, who identify themselves as Republicans, are more likely to view fake news as accurate ones that those, who associate themselves with the Democrats.

A total of 3,015 US adults took part in the survey on November 28 – December 1. The respondents were asked to identify whether the presented news headlines were accurate or fake.
