MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On November 9, Republican candidate Donald Trump won the US presidential election triumphing over his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.

"For all of Trump’s public life, tastemakers and intellectuals have dismissed him as a vulgarian and carnival barker, a showman with big flash and little substance. But what those critics never understood was that their disdain gave him strength," the article by TIME's Washington Bureau Chief Michael Scherer reads.

The magazine selected the first Man of the Year (the Person of the Year since 1999) in 1927 when US pilot Charles Lindbergh won the title following the first ever solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic. In 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was named the Person of the Year.
