Officer-Involved Shooting at Reno High School

Authorities are on the scene at a high school in Nevada, where an officer-involved shooting took place late Wednesday morning.

One person was shot at Hug High School in Washoe County, causing the school to be placed on a "code red" lock down.

"Officers appeared to have detained a group of teens behind the school shortly after the incident," the Gazette-Journal reported. "It was unclear why they had the youths sitting on a curb behind the school."

The school is now "stable and secure with a heavy police presence," a statement from the Washoe County School District asserted.

One highschool freshman who spoke to the paper, Robert Barragan, explained that he saw two male students fighting outside the school library before one of them brandished a knife and stabbed the other student.

A Washoe County School officer who was present at the scene shot the 16-year-old student who was brandishing the knife in the shoulder. Another campus officer arrived shortly after.

The Washoe County School District Police Department has not yet confirmed Barragan's account, but told KOLO that no one is currently in custody and that the investigation is on-going.

The medical conditions of the students have not yet been released, but Officer Tim Broadway has confirmed to KRNV that one person was transported to a local hospital. A triage center has been set up in the school parking lot.

Parents are being asked to bring a current form of identification to pick up their children from the school.

Anyone present at the scene who may have captured cellphone video is being asked not to post it on social media, and instead to contact the police department.
