WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Canadian Foreign Minister Stephane Dion will attend a NATO meeting with his counterparts in the Belgian capital of Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday to advance commitments made at a recent summit of the alliance, the Canadian Foreign Ministry announced in a press release on Tuesday.

"During the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting, Minister Dion will participate in five plenary sessions on NATO-European Union cooperation, conflict prevention on NATO’s periphery, trans-Atlantic security issues, the situation in Ukraine and NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan," the release explained.

Canada has agreed to lead NATO’s military buildup in Latvia, where the alliance has agreed to base 1,000 troops.

At a July summit in Warsaw, leaders of NATO members finalized plans to station 4,000 troops in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland to counter Russia.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that amassing troops and military equipment on its borders is provocative, violates past NATO pledges and can lead to a regional and global destabilization.
