The US city of Los Angeles, California increased security throughout its subway system Tuesday in response to a threatened terrorist act, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced.

PORTLAND (Sputnik) – On Monday, an English-speaking male in another country phoned in an unspecified threat against the Los Angeles County Metro Rail’s Universal City station, the Los Angeles Times cited Deirdre Fike, assistant director in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s local office, as saying.

"Stepped-up security presence at Metro stations today out of an abundance of caution," Garcetti posted on his Twitter account.

Fike wouldn’t disclose the country in which the call was made, although it was received at a number for relaying anonymous tips to law enforcement. An unspecified foreign government passed on the information to an FBI terrorism task force, the Times reported.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck reportedly described the threat as “very specific.”

Tuesday morning, Garcetti rode the Metro line on which the station is located to calm commuters.
