The decision by the US Congress to renew sanctions against Iran is in breach of last year’s nuclear deal, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to prolong 1979 sanctions by another 10 years after they expire this month. The extension was endorsed by the lower chamber of the parliament last month and would now go before President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign it before he leaves office next year.

"The recent approval of extension of sanctions against Iran by the US House of Representatives and Senate is contrary to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the US obligations under international law regarding non-interference in other countries’ internal and international relations," Ghasemi said in a statement quoted by Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

Something Rotten in State of Iran: Why Tehran Runs in Place As Sanctions Lifted
Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei lashed out at the United States in November, saying renewing sanctions was no different from imposing new ones from scratch, which was counter to US commitment to ease sanctions on Iran.

In July last year, Iran signed a historic deal with Russia, the United States, China, Britain, France and Germany where it pledged to curb its nuclear research in exchange for sanctions relief.
