Russian President Vladimir Putin has delivered his annual State of the Nation Address. It focused on the country’s foreign and domestic policy priorities. Radio Sputnik discussed the address with Kirill Koktysh, associate professor of International Politics at Moscow-based MGIMO University.

Talking about Putin’s speech on global issues and need for cooperation between Russia and western countries in order to tackle terrorism, Koktysh said, “Russia is ready to work with any country that is self-dependent and can realize its sole interest. Of course, it was a message to President-elect Trump; it was also a message for strengthening current good relations with China. It could also be for a breakthrough in Russia-Japan’s relations during an upcoming summit,” Koktysh said.

He further said that it was also a message to Europe but the EU hasn’t demonstrated an immediate level of self-dependence because Germany has over 50,000 American troops inside its territory.

The professor further spoke about how Russia’s economic development was one of the key points of Putin’s speech. Talking about the economic growth of the country, the professor said “Of course we would like this to happen but the matters have obstacles right now and we should look for the order that the president should give after his State address. Only then it can be implemented and we will see on what bases it will be implemented,” Kokytsh said.

Talking about how realistic it is to reduce the inflation by 6% in Russia, the professor said that it’s a target and nevertheless Russia managed to get quite close to the previously set targets.

However, Kokytsh also added that, “So far no tools have been utilized as to how this can be achieved, so we should look at how these orders will be followed.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his annual State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on the situation in the country and the country's domestic and foreign policy priorities.

In his speech, the Russian leader touched upon global issues, saying that Russia is concerned that more conflicts are emerging around the world. Moscow’s relations with the West were also among the key issues on the agenda of Vladimir Putin’s address.

Speaking about the current tension with some Western countries the Russian President reiterated that Moscow is not looking for enemies. Speaking of the partnership with the US, Vladimir Putin said that Moscow is ready to cooperate with the new US administration on an equal footing as Russian-US cooperation is in the interest of the whole world.
