UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the UN Security Council held a meeting in which it unanimously adopted new sanctions on North Korea in response to the country’s nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
"This resolution imposes a new binding cap on how much coal the DPRK [North Korea] can ship out of the country, cutting what the DPRK earns by approximately 700 million dollars per year from its 2015 total or more than 60 percent of its coal export revenue," Power said.
Power noted that the resolution also imposes a ban on North Korea’s export of copper, nickel, silver and zinc, among other restrictions.
The US ambassador claimed the new sanctions will cut North Koreas entire export revenue by 25 percent.
In 2016, North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests and at least 25 launches using ballistic missile technology. In response, the UN Security Council has held nine emergency consultations on North Korea.
