US House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said Wednesday he discussed establishing a barrier on the border with Mexico to prevent illegal immigration with President-elect Donald Trump.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — McCaul and Trump met on Tuesday, he has been tipped as the frontrunner to be chosen by the president-elect as next secretary of homeland security, according to US media reports.

When asked whether he discussed with Trump building a wall and making Mexico pay for it, McCaul said, “We talked about a barrier. It will be multi-fasted, multi-layered, involving a physical barrier, primarily fency.”

The committee chairman added the barrier “will involve technologies, aviation assets, censors, surveillance.”

In the course of his campaign, Trump stated he would build a wall on the US-Mexico border to stop the flow of illegal immigration, deport illegal immigrants, and ban refugees from Islamic countries facing unrest.

Trump won November 8 presidential election by gaining a major electoral lead over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. The inauguration of the US president-elect will take place on January 20.
