WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, which officially ended on Wednesday, produced 15 named storms including seven hurricanes, producing the greatest loss of life in more than a decade, the US commercial weather broadcaster AccuWeather said in a press release.

"The season was the deadliest since 2005," the release stated on Wednesday.

The greatest loss of life occurred in Haiti from Hurricane Matthew, in which more than 1,500 people died, according to the release.

Matthew later cause the worst flooding in the US state of North Carolina since Hurricane Floyd in 1999, with dozens killed while attempting to drive on flooded roadways, the release noted.

November 30 marks the official end of the Atlantic hurricane season.
