Residents of the city of Gyoda in Saitama prefecture turned harvesting into an amazing art display. With the help of a student from Musashino Art University, they constructed monsters, made of rice straw and bamboo figures, from the popular role-play video game “Dragon Quest,” local media reported.
The straw they used was left after harvesting a field which displayed a “rice paddy art” picture.
The largest of the monsters, King Smile, is 9.3 meters (30.5 feet) high and 8.8 (28.9 feet) meters wide, while smaller Smiles are 2 (6.6 feet) meters high and 2.1 meters (6.9 feet) wide.

The figures will be on display till March 26, if they are not washed away by winter storms, of course.
Rice paddy art is an art form originating in Japan when people plant rice of various types and colors to create giant pictures in a field. Another city in Saitama prefecture, Gyodashi, set a Guinness record last year, creating world’s largest rice paddy art.
