EU border agency Frontex approved the deployment of a liaison officer in the Western Balkans on Monday in order to promote cooperation with non-EU states.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The regional liaison officer will be appointed in spring 2017 and will be based in Serbia’s capital Belgrade, Frontex specified.

"Frontex Management Board has approved the appointment of a Frontex liaison officer in the Western Balkans as part of the agency’s strategy to further strengthen the cooperation with countries outside the EU," a statement published on the agency’s website said.

The EU agency also plans to deploy additional liaison officers to the non-EU countries, affected by migration flows.

Frontex was established in 2004 to encourage and facilitate the cooperation between the EU national border guards protecting its external borders.
