US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson is being urged to block Obama administration appointees from seeking permanent jobs in his agency, according to a letter from US House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The letter cited recent DHS announcements of senior career positions open at the agency, including principal deputy assistant secretary for policy, deputy assistant secretary for Americas’ policy, as well as several jobs in US Customs and Border Protection.

"Allowing Obama appointees to embed themselves into the bureaucracy for the long haul could create unnecessary interference," the letter stated on Wednesday. "The practice, known as ‘burrowing’ can impede the priorities of the incoming administration."

The US Office of Personnel Management recently announced a moratorium on career placements for outgoing presidential appointees.

McCaul’s letter asks Johnson to provide his committee with a list of DHS political appointees who are seeking an exception to the moratorium and a description of career positions being sought.
