Germany Not Going to Interfere With Nord Stream-2 Project Implementation

The German government will not hinder the implementation of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline project as participating companies are decision-makers on the issue, Ursula Borak, the director for European and international energy policy at Germany’s Ministry of Economics and Energy told Sputnik on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The start of the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is planned for 2018. It aims to deliver up to 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia to Germany annually via the Baltic Sea. Russian energy giant Gazprom has a shareholder agreement to extend the existing Nord Stream with partner European energy firms.

"From the Federal government I can only say that this [Nord Stream-2] project belongs to the companies, the companies will have to decide [if to drop it] so we have to wait for their decision, we don't really know. It's nothing from the policy side that we interfere with," Borak said on the sidelines of the International Energy Efficiency and Energy Development Forum (ENES 2016) in Moscow.
