General Dynamics to Support Iraq’s M1A1 Abrams Tanks

US defense contractor General Dynamics was awarded a more than $65 million foreign military sales contract to provide logistic support and training for Iraqi M1A1 Abrams tanks and M88A2 recovery vehicles, the US Department of Defense said in an announcement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — General Dynamics Land Systems of Sterling Heights, Michigan, was awarded a $65.2 million foreign military sales contract for contractor logistic support and training for M1A1 tanks andM88A2 recovery vehicles, the Department said on Tuesday.

Most of the work will be performed in Iraq and some of the work in the US state of Michigan, with an estimated completion date of December 31, 2017, the Defense Department noted.The Iraqi Army is estimated to have 140 M1A1 Abrams tanks in its inventory, but has problems maintaining and repairing them.

The refurbished tanks supplied by the United States to the Iraq Army are not the most enhanced version of the tank.

General Dynamics is currently developing the next generation M1A2 SEP v4 Abrams tank, which will include networking technology with next-generation sights, sensors, targeting systems and digital networking technology to defeat the Russian T-14 Armata or its Chinese equivalent.
