UKIP Misspent $0.5Mln of EU Funding on Boosting Brexit Campaign, Electioneering
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Electoral Commission set up by the UK Parliament started on Tuesday an investigation into the financing of the UK right-wing Independence Party (UKIP) to figure out if the party had received any illicit donations from European political parties.

On November 21, following the annual audit of EU parties’ funding, the European Parliament said that the Alliance for Direct Democracy in Europe (ADDE) and an affiliated foundation, the Initiative for Direct Democracy in Europe (IDDE), violated the law by making illegal donations to the UKIP.

"Commission has now opened its own investigation into UKIP to look at whether there has been any breach of UK election law. This includes whether any impermissible donations have been accepted by the party," the statement by the Electoral Commission said.

European parties have limits on the use of the funding received from the European Union, namely, EU donations may cover costs, related to European elections but they are prohibited to be used for funding national parties.

The next county council elections in the United Kingdom will be held on May 4, 2017.
