The North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) worrisome decision-making in its eastward expansion prompts Russia to take countermeasures, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an Oliver Stone documentary on Ukraine.

MOSCOW, November 21 (Sputnik) — Putin said a new NATO member finds it difficult to "resist the pressure" from the United States as the leader of the alliance, leading to the deployment of missile defense, new bases, and even strike systems on its territory.

"And what are we to do? We must therefore take countermeasures, in other words expose those objects to our missile systems that, in our opinion, are beginning to threaten us. The situation is straining," Putin said. "I do not always understand the logic of our partners."

"Why do we react to NATO's expansion? We are concerned about the practice of decision-making. We know how decisions are made," Putin told Stone in "Ukraine on Fire."

The documentary shedding light on the 2013-2014 so-called Maidan riots in Kiev is scheduled to air on REN TV at 14:00 GMT on Monday. "Ukraine on Fire" was directed by Igor Lopatonok, a US citizen of Ukrainian origin.

Since 2014, NATO has been building up its military presence in Europe, especially in Eastern European countries neighboring Russia, using Moscow’s alleged interference in the Ukrainian conflict as a pretext. Moscow has repeatedly denied the claims and warned NATO that the military buildup on Russia’s borders is provocative and threatens the existing strategic balance of power.
