The role of Belarus in ensuring stability on the European continent is going to increase amid new tough challenges of the modern world, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Monday.

MINSK (Sputnik) – Minsk hosted peace talks between the Ukrainian government and the representatives of self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics in 2014 and 2015.

"I am sure that under current conditions the value of Belarus as stabilizing factor in Europe will increase. And that is very useful for Europe, it always can use this factor," Lukashenko said during a meeting with a delegation of the EU Council’s Political and Security Committee.

The situation across the globe has become less stable within last several years, the Belarusian president added. Lukashenko also noted that Belarus found itself in the epicenter of clashes of global actors’ geopolitical interests.

"Belarus is more and more perceived as a pole of stability in the region… our country is the only member of the Eastern Partnership [EU initiative] without military and frozen conflicts."

He added that Belarus contributed to fighting organized crime, illegal migration and human trafficking.
