The death toll from early Sunday's train derailment near the northern Indian city of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh has passed 100, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The death toll has climbed to 100, with 200 passengers reported injured, according to the Indian television channel NDTV.

It is not clear what caused 14 railcars to veer off the track, but the Ministry of Railways vowed to take "strictest possible action" against those who could be responsible for the fatal accident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "anguished beyond words" on learning about the loss of lives after the derailing of the Patna-Indore express.
