WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US senators and the American public should scrutinize positions taken by Donald Trump's attorney general nominee, Jeff Sessions, on capital punishment, abortion rights and presidents' wartime authority, American Liberties Civil Union (ACLU) executive director Anthony Romero said in a press release Friday.

"In [Sessions'] confirmation hearings, senators, the media, and the American public should closely examine his stances on these key issues to ensure we can have confidence in his ability to uphold the Constitution and our laws," Romero stated in the release.

Earlier Friday, the Trump transition team confirmed that Sessions, a Republican member of the US Senate from the state of Alabama, will be nominated to the Senate for consideration as attorney general — the country's highest law enforcement official.

Sessions' nomination was announced along with that of US Representative Mike Pompeo to serve as Central Intelligence Agency director in the Trump administration.

Regarding the Pompeo nomination, Romero said the congressman's views on US government mass surveillance have been rejected by federal courts and led to numerous lawsuits on privacy grounds.

The ACLU official emphasized in the release that his organization doesn't intend to challenge Trump's executive-branch or judicial nominations but is seeking to educate the public and members of Congress about nominees and their records.
