"[The German media] are currently anti-American, in a nutshell, because they do not recognize the rights of the US people to elect the president they want. There was a real 'pre-election war' in the United States, which is not possible in Europe. However, the United States made the decision, which was not recognized by the German mainstream media. I have not seen so far anything like this in the German media," Willy Wimmer said.
US President Barack Obama arrived in Berlin on Wednesday to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel. On Thursday, the two held a meeting, where they discussed the crisis in Ukraine, climate change and the proposed US-EU Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which Trump had vowed to scrap.
After the meeting, Obama said that he expected his successor Trump to follow his administration's cooperation blueprint.
Speaking about Obama's visit to Berlin, Wimmer said that the trip signified that "the situation in Europe… was not really favored by the United States."
"They prefer to embroil the European countries, and not to engage in the common affairs with the whole European Union. This is a signal that cannot be underestimated," the German politician noted.
Wimmer added that Washington would be trying to put "virtual handcuffs" on the new US president and let him know that he was unlikely to change the "warlike course," formed under Obama.
