The lead of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton over her Republican rival Donald Trump in the US popular vote has surpassed 1 million, according to the 2016 national popular vote tracker data.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Clinton is leading with 61,964,263 votes against Trump’s 60,961,967 votes, data released by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report on Tuesday showed.

Trump won the US presidential election on November 8 by securing the necessary 270 Electoral College votes.

The Electoral College is the only mechanism that matters in deciding the next US president by organizing votes on a state by state basis.

Trump's inauguration will be held on January 20, 2017.
