US Troops in Japan Unlikely to Change Dislocation Amid Trump's Election

Commander of the US Forces in Japan Lt. Gen. Jerry P. Martinez said that dislocation of the US troops is unlikely to be changed under the presidency of Donald Trump.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — Dislocation of the US troops in Japan is unlikely to be changed amid the election of Republican candidate Donald Trump, Commander of the US Forces in Japan Lt. Gen. Jerry P. Martinez said Thursday as quoted by local media.

Remarks made by Martinez to Kyodo News agency came against the backdrop of the statements made by Trump during the election campaign where he pledged to make countries such as Japan, Germany and South Korea pay for their alliance with the United States and their protection by the US troops present on their territories.

On Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe congratulated Trump on his victory in Tuesday's US presidential elections and expressed hope that the two countries would strengthen the US-Japan alliance.

Trump won an unexpected victory during the 2016 election with 290 electoral votes, while his rival Hillary Clinton received 232 votes despite winning the popular vote by a margin of over 200,000. The inauguration is due on January 20.
