WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The White House meeting, at Obama’s invitation, was scheduled to begin Thursday at 11 a.m. EST (16:00 GMT).

On Wednesday, Obama said in a post-election speech, that a smooth transfer of power is a "hallmark of US democracy."

Hours before the president spoke, Republican nominee Trump declared victory in Tuesday’s election against Democrat Hillary Clinton, shocking the political establishment and sparking protests that continue.

After the talks with Obama, Trump will meet with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Politico reported.
