The European Union wants US President-Elect to spell out his plans for foreign cooperation and climate policy in the coming months, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Republican nominee Trump won the US presidency in Tuesday’s election, having gained 290 Electoral College votes, 19 more than the 270 needed to win.

"We want to know how the global trade policy will play out. We must know what intentions Mr. Trump has in terms of forming alliances. We must know what climate goals he has in mind. All this must be clarified in the next few months," Juncker told reporters in Berlin.

Juncker said this did not mean sending a list of things the EU Commission wants to be clear on to Washington, "but we must clear up the intentions of our key strategic partner."

US-EU TTIP Free Trade Deal Still Possible With Trump as President - Berlin
The commissioner described the EU-US free trade deal – the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) – as being of "existential importance."

He ruled out however that the controversial pact could be finalized in the coming years. "I do not see this happening in the next couple of years," Juncker admitted.

EU leaders wanted to see the deal agreed on by the end of incumbent US President Barack Obama’s term but the talks made little progress this year. The election of TTIP-sceptic billionaire Donald Trump to succeed Obama next January dampened hopes that it would ever be signed.
