US Representative Tammy Duckworth, an Army helicopter pilot wounded in the Iraq war and later elected to Congress, was set to become the first Asian-American woman in the Senate with a landslide victory in Illinois over Republican incumbent Mark Kirk.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Duckworth, whose legs were amputated from her war injuries, was leading Kirk, 65 percent to 30 percent, with 14 percent of votes counted statewide.

Before Kirk, the Senate seat was held by Barack Obama before his election as US president in 2008.
