In the wake of Donald Trump's election to the US presidency, more than 10,000 Facebook users say they will show up at demonstrations in New York City.

Socialist Alternative called for a Union Square march in New York City, with plans to picket Trump Tower in midtown, after traveling 40 blocks.

Protests have already sparked in the area, beginning Wednesday afternoon.

Demonstrations began in cities across the US early Wednesday morning, within hours of the announcement that Trump has pulled off a surprise win in the Electoral College.

There have also been school walkouts and protests at colleges and high schools throughout the country. One California high school walkout on Wednesday saw roughy 1,500 students chanting "Si se puede!" (Yes we can!) and waving Mexican flags.
