Justice Dept. Reviews US Election Complaints on Case-by-Case Basis
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Carr underscored that any information alleging violations is comprehensively scrutinized.

“When a complaint is received or information alleging wrongdoing comes to the attention of the FBI, it is carefully evaluated at the field office level before any formal investigation is begun,” he said.

Carr noted that an effort is made to informally collect more information to determine if there is a basis for a preliminary or full investigation.

“If there is evidence that suggests a federal violation, a case will be opened following consultation with FBI headquarters and the appropriate division at the Justice Department,” Carr added.
