Hundreds of Canadian citizens protested in the country's 12 cities against carbon taxes aimed at fighting climate changes, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Canada is currently implementing its own plan to reduce the country's carbon footprint. The plans imply rise in prices in order to affect the provinces that do not meet requirements on reducing carbon emissions.

Hundreds of Canadians gathered at 12 rallies across the country's province of Alberta protesting against the carbon taxes proposed by the New Democratic Party (NDP), the CBC broadcaster reported Saturday.

The protesters called for a referendum on the issue of introducing the taxes.

In line with the carbon taxes, from January 1, 2017 fuel prices in the province are expected to increase significantly. For example, gas prices will increase by 4.5 Canadian cents per liter (3.4 US cents at the current exchange rates). The rise in prices is expected to continue in 2018. The new prices affect the price of almost all goods.
