Former UKIP Leader Promises to Return to Politics If Brexit Betrayed

Former leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) party Nigel Farage said he will return to politics if Brexit is delayed or blocked.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Delivering a speech at the European Freedom Awards in Stockholm, Farage stressed that he would renew the fight for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union if any attempts to postpone or reject the decision were made, the Local newspaper reported.

"If there is any attempt to water it down, to kick it into the long grass, the British people will not put up with it, and I will myself return from this very quiet period of my life, this retirement that I'm going through," Farage was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

On Thursday, Farage expressed concern over the ruling of the London High Court, according to which the UK government cannot trigger Article 50 of the European Union treaty to launch the Brexit process without the British parliament's approval.

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the 28-nation bloc. According to the final results, some 52 percent of voters decided to support Brexit.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has previously stated she intends to trigger Article 50 at the end of March 2017.
