The London High Court ruled that the British government cannot trigger Article 50 of the European Union treaty to launch the Brexit process without British lawmakers' approval.

LONDON (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom cannot trigger Article 50 of the European Union treaty to launch the Brexit process without British lawmakers' approval, the London High Court ruled on Thursday.

"For the reasons set out in the judgment, we decide that the Government does not have power under the Crown's prerogative to give notice pursuant to Article 50 for the UK to withdraw from the European Union," the ruling reads.

On June 23, the nationwide referendum on EU membership was held in the United Kingdom, in which 51.9 percent of voters said the country should leave the bloc. UK Prime Minister Theresa May promised to start the procedure of leaving the European Union by the end of March 2017.
