UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Churkin explained that Russia had previously proposed expanding the JIM's mandate to track reports of terrorist groups preparing or using chemical weapons, but the proposal was blocked.
"We need to understand, if we are to extend the mandate of JIM, if some added value can be given to it," Churkin told reporters on Wednesday. "First, we need to understand what the fourth report is going to be. We are discussing that tomorrow."
Overall, Churkin said the scope of the JIM had been too narrow and the value of their product was questionable.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons United Nations Joint Investigative Mechanism was established in 2015 and allows for the investigation and prosecution of alleged war crimes involving chemical weapons in Syria.
The UN Security Council is scheduled to discuss the JIM again on Thursday.
