The United States will continue to work with its partners in the region to defeat terrorism following recent attacks claimed by al-Shabaab in Kenya and Somalia, National Security Council spokesperson Ned Price said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The terrorist group al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for three attacks in Kenya and Somalia over the last 24 hours.

Earlier in the day, armed assailants killed at least ten hotel guests and a caretaker in the Mandera region of northeast Kenya.

"We will continue to work in partnership with regional governments and AMISOM [African Union Mission in Somalia] to deliver a lasting defeat to terrorist groups that seek to undermine regional stability," Price stated on Tuesday.

Later, the group claimed responsibility for the suicide truck bombing of an AMISOM base in the Somali town of Beledweyne that killed a number of Djiboutian soldiers.

An al-Shabaab spokesperson said the group was also behind the shooting death of a Somali intelligence officer killed Monday as he walked to a mosque in the capital Mogadishu.

United Nations and African Union as well as UN-backed troops have forced al-Shabaab from much of its territory in Somalia but the al-Qaeda affiliated group continues to carry out suicide attacks against civilians in Somalia and neighboring Kenya.
