Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Hits Western Japan's Tottori Prefecture
05:30 GMT 21.10.2016 (Updated: 13:07 GMT 09.02.2023) An earthquake has shaken the prefecture of Tottori in western Japan.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Japan's western prefecture of Tottori, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Friday.
The quake at the shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) occurred at 2:07 p.m. local time (05:07 GMT), according to the JMA.
20 October 2016, 05:25 GMT
The Japanese public broadcaster NHK said there were reports of damage coming in, including collapsing houses and power outages that affected 30,000 homes across the prefecture.
The earthquake, which measured 6 on Japan’s scale of 0 to 7, disrupted train services and grounded flights.
The channel cited officials from a nuclear power plant in the neighboring Shimane prefecture saying the facility had not been damaged. Japan stalled all of its atomic power plants after a quake triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima NPP in 2011.
