The European Space Agency (ESA) said Wednesday it had received signal from the trace gas orbiter of the ExoMars-2016 mission after its lander landed on the Red Planet.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – ExoMars is a joint mission of ESA and Russia’s Roscosmos space corporation. It aims to prove the existence of methane in the planet’s atmosphere, which could lead to the confirmation of the existence of life on Mars.

"Acquisition of signal! @esaoperations hears @ESA_TGO's signal loud & clear after it emerges from behind #Mars," ESA said on Twitter.

A Russian Proton-M rocket carrier lifted off with the ExoMars’ orbiter and the landing modules from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in March.
