The United States could resume counterterror efforts with Russia in Syria if the political process resumes in that country, US Department of State deputy spokesperson Mark Toner said in a press briefing on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Toner said the United States wants the Syrian government to stop military operations in Aleppo to get the political process back on track.

"If we get there, then all other opportunities are on the table, which is going after Nusra and going after Daesh [Islamic State] more constructively and more productively. Not with the regime, but with Russia," Toner told reporters.

However, Toner acknowledged the United States is not expecting any breakthroughs on the Syria situation during multilateral talks with some of the International Syria Support Group members in Lausanne, Switzerland this weekend.

Earlier on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he has no special expectations for the meeting and does not plan to unveil new proposals.
